WHAT IS A LATE ENROLLMENT PENALTY

  • Part A

If you don't enroll in Part A when you're first eligible, you may have to pay a penalty of up to 10% per month for twice the number of years you didn't enroll. However, most Americans receive premium-free Part A and don't have to pay a late enrollment penalty. The exception is if you or your spouse haven't worked and paid taxes for at least 10 years.

  • Part B

If you don't enroll in Part B when you're eligible, you may have to pay a penalty of 10% for each year you could have signed up.

  • Part D

If you don't enroll in Part D when you're eligible, you may have to pay a penalty of 1% for each month you were late enrolling, rounded up to the nearest $0.10
